Poly 3s 3 Old Wilsonians
1
Poly were missing several regulars for this
one and it was a chance for some fresh faces to come
in. Nevertheless a strong side
took to the field looking to pick up their 4th win
on the trot.
The home side started on top and took a
deserved lead when Spear slotted home from the edge of the box
after confusion in the visitors’ defence.
Wilsonians were being kept at bay well by an
unfamiliar back 4, helped by the early withdrawal of the gentleman
who had proved an aerial threat throughout the previous meeting
between the sides – strangely he had started on the wing though
rather than up front where he had looked menacing at their
place.
Poly doubled their advantage midway through
the half when a blistering long range effort by Symcox proved too
hot to handle for the visiting keeper.
Buckland was on hand to nod home the rebound from close range
before anyone else could react.
At half time the message was simple, get the
next goal and we should be home and dry. So it proved to be when good link up play allowed
Symcox to finish and take his tally for the season to 11.
To their credit, Wilsonians didn’t stop
playing and worked their way back into the game. With the wind pegging Poly back and making it
difficult for the defence to clear their lines it was just as well
the three goal cushion had been created.
Wilsonians pulled a goal back with 15 minutes
remaining. There looked to be a
suspicion of offside about it, but the striker played to the
whistle and took the goal well, giving Davies no chance.
That was to be all they could muster
though. A second Wilsonians goal could
have given the home side the jitters, but some solid defending from
Brown, Johnston, Harper and substitute Watt in particular kept them
at bay.
