The Polytechnic returned to action
after the cold snap with mixed results across the 10
featuring sides.
The first XI lost 3-0 away at
Broomfield in an AFA Cup match that was postponed a week
before.
The reserves fared better, triumphing
4-2 at home to Old Salesians with Webster, Campbell (2) and
Pollard on the scoresheet.
The excellent pre-Christmas form of
the 3s came to an end with a 2-1 defeat at Civil Service. A
slow start saw Johnston’s team two down at the break; an
own-goal gave them hope but despite plenty of late pressure,
they were unable to grab an equaliser.
The fourth side, like the
1s, were in cup action – and also lost. Old Actonians were their
vanquishers, 6-0 away in the SAL
competition.
The 5s drew 3-3 with Civil Service to
lose a little ground in the race for promotion.
They fought from 1-0 down to 2-1 up
just before half-time thanks to two Grieve headers, with
Wallis providing the crosses; Civil Service equalised soon
after then took the lead from the penalty spot with less than
10 minutes to go.
However the Civil Service’s joy was
short-lived, Cull tapping in after good work from Soanes on
the right.
The 6s, top of that Minor (South)
Division Two division which contains the fifth-placed 5s,
won at HSBC at the weekend - 3-1 in the SAL Cup.
The 7s welcomed Kew Association to
Chiswick and took a valuable 3-2 win. Usual suspects Lyons,
Williams and Sullivan were the scorers; despite sitting
eighth of 10 teams, Sullivan’s men have only played five
league games due to cup commitments and can go top by winning
their matches in hand.
The 8s are top of that Minor (South)
Division Five, nine points ahead of their club-mates having
played four matches more, after a great 7-1 result away at
Bank of England 4s.
Semancik bagged four goals as they
recovered from the 4-0 loss at Old Wilsonians in Surrey last
weekend – they were the only team in action.
The
ninth team got their comeuppance for walloping league leaders
Weirside at their place before Christmas, the opponents sending out
a stronger outfit and beating the Poly 5-3.
Moran and Bamforth pulled the score back to 2-2
after a poor start; substitute Holmes then made it 3-3 after
Weirside had retaken the lead. However Weirside scored another two
quick goals - and this time there was no reply
from the Poly.
The Poly Vets went down
7-3 to a very good Civil Service side. Lacking a regular
goalkeeper, the score was 5-1 at half-time; skipper McDonald
was encouraged by the 2-2 ‘second-half result’ – and by
Craig’s hat-trick.
The vets have a cup quarter-final next
weekend.
