2007-2008 Season Review
What a great, almost brilliant season and compared to the previous one outstanding! Walshey, as the manager the previous season, had admirably set a standard that even the diminutive John Pybus could only improve upon. Having won only two games all season there was hope for the new season as we were victorious in our final game (ableit a walk over on the final day in a nothing game). Walsh had to go, Pybus drafted from the 1's in to sort the shambles out. Starting with 11 players on the pitch, with subs, certainly was a step in the right direction. Being on time, yes, occasional water, nice, designated keeper (Oli the Cat), always helpful, getting players down for training, liking it. Things were moving in the right direction. This was Pybus at his best.
Welcoming new players in to the fold such as Welsh Rob (player of the season, still in search of his trophy), Taff, James Raynes to name just a handful helped bring new drive to the team, whilst established 2's players such as Driller Luke and Moggsy were on fire up front, with Jimmy and Will having telepathic understanding in the midfield. Will knew Jimmy would need a lift to the game, and Jimmy knew Will would be late. Storrsaldinho slotted in at right full back and Woody was ever present at left back. We had a settled side and were on a roll. With confidence high we hammered teams thinking that we would be once again a walk over. The Poly ground became a fortress and teams feared visiting. John Keane was reinforcing the trophy cabinet in eager anticipation and planning on going out at the top. Even when we faltered no-one could stop us. Whilst losing 4-2 at EBOGS with only 20 mins left in a must win game, JJ decided to take drastic action, leaping like a salmon for a header and landing smack bang on his neck. An ambulance was called, Taff was lying still, the referee called the game off only to see JJ miraculously recover. 'Games back on guys' the ref announced. No, no, no! Hitchcock was already naked in the shower with Jimmy. Any excuse boys!
Well just like Pybus' love making (promises so much but rarely delivers) the season had a somewhat disappointing end to it. Due to our magnificent cup runs; beaten semi finalists and finalists by the same Old Medonians team, we had a fixture list as congested as Moggsy's social diary. We played 12 games in 9 days and as a result we missed out on the championship by a gnats whisker. We would have to be content with a very good season, promotion but no silverware. However, if we could have taken it at the beginning of the season we would have snapped their hands off. Well done all, job done.
2008-2009 Season Ahead
So what does the season ahead hold? Championship winning side, couple of cups in the cabinet? Who know but all I will say is that we have the best set of players for a long long time in the 2's and as the season progresses we all need to fight to keep our places as competition is going to be tough. We need to be focussed, organised, committed, and have a winning mentality. The 1's and 2's are going to become a tight unit and there has never been a better opportunity to anyone involved in the 2's to break through in to the 1's. All you need is a Kiwi passport and Sealsey's bank details to set up a direct debit.
Onwards and upwards boys and here's to a good, no great season.
