3rd Team 2007/08 Review

The highlight of the 3s season was reaching the final of the AFA Junior Cup, but unfortunately it was not to be Polytechnic’s day and the trophy ended up with Old Finchleians.  Just before half time, keeper Neil Howard sustained a bad cruciate ligament injury and with him went our chances.  In fairness though, Finchleians probably deserved the 3-1 victory overall.

The league campaign started slowly, but momentum really picked up in the winter months with Johnston’s men going on a long unbeaten run between November and February.  However the cup run had left a backlog of fixtures, and after the final there was still a possibility of promotion with 6 games in hand over some of the sides leading the way.  The challenge never really materialised though as a combination of a heavy spell of midweek games and key players being unavailable put paid to any hope of an immediate return to Division 1.

Poly 3s are pictured below prior to a 3-1 league victory against Kew Association in January 2008.

At the end of season awards night, Dan Busman collected the player of the year accolade for his excellent performances in midfield, in what was his first season with the club.  Honourable mention must go to Jerome Yewdall as well whose 37 goals over the course of the season was an incredible haul.

For 2008/09, the hope is that the addition of a few players and the retention of most of the old faces a more sustained promotion challenge can be launched.  And with the taste of cup final defeat still bitter in the mouth the players should be aiming to go 1 better this time round.
