Poly 6s

Skipper: Dominic Rowles

Into the final third

We are now into March 2010 and it's a case of so far so good for the Poly 6s. Into the AFA cup final and unbeaten in the league, the double is a real possibility at this stage. Some great wins, such as the home 5-2 victory over arch rivals Old Actonians, and some great performances from the whole squad. JB and Tavares set the tone at the start of the season, replaced by Turna and Kelly as the outstanding performers, and now the turn of Smith and penalty saving hero R2 Sidlo.

There is still time for it all to go pear shaped. We have to play Kew (second at the time of writing) twice and have difficult games at Weirside, Wickham and at home to Civil Service. We have a combined defensive age of 275 and some tired limbs are already beginning to cause injury problems.

Thoughts are now turning to the annual tour to France in June, which last year sounded the deathknell for several relationships. Though Rob Elliot did survive the trip against all odds.

New season excitement

Thankfully the season is about to return, and there is the annual sense of anticipation, promises of commitment and occasionaly dips into the transfer market. Pre-season has been underway for some weeks, but the 6th team squad havent been that well represented, which will no doubt show in the early encounters, with several pitch side collapses expected. Indeed, the 6s could field a back 4 with a combined age of 178 this season, surely one of the most experienced in the league. St Johns Ambulance will be on standby.

In the close season, following the open bus parade with the AFA cup past the Redback and down Acton Lane, Poly 6 took the annual trip to Crecy in France and came back with the spoils. The captain was voted most drunk. Max Rushden's contract was surprisingly renewed by Soccer AM, giving us another year of star struck spotty teenage opponents asking for his autograph. Martin Kelly's new racehorse ran, Richard Price had his annual no BBQ this year, John Keane Junior began a drinking binge, Rob Elliot decided to risk his liberty by relocating to the far east, R2 bought a new bright yellow football kit, Sandy Smith risked life and limb by slapping Mark Cringle on the back, Aubrey got spliced, Chilly hit 40, the captain made inappropriate suggestions to Mrs Tapper, and hopefully all of the lawyers started earning some money.

Poly 6 now find themselves in the same division as the 5s who were the 4s the previous year. We also renew old rivalries with Old As and Carshalton 5s who are owed 9 from last season. Some late market activity sees Nathan the ex copper return to the club, and Max has found 17 new players including a mystery striker who is the best player in the universe. He has agreed to pay all of the annual subs.

Here we go again.
